Born in South Africa, Marilena Solomou showed her musical interest and talent at an early age. She started her musical studies as a pianist and she completed a Bachelor of Arts in Music specialized in performing (singing) and piano accompaniment, at Anglia Polytechnic University in Cambridge UK.
She has a piano diploma from the Greek Conservatory of Athens with Distinction and the Licentiate Diploma in Music Performance (Singing) from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Honours.

During her academic years she performed the roles of Suzanna (Le nozze di Figaro), Micaella (Carmen), Adele (Die Fledermauss), the Fairy in the musical ‘Cinderella’ and Maria in ‘The Sound of music’. She was also a soloist in several recitals and concerts, as well as a member in the Wind Orchestra where she played the flute.
Marilena was a prize winner -First Honour - at the Panellinian Singing Competition in Athens (Greece) in 1999. In November 2000 she was selected to participate in the First International Singing Competition in Guangzhou in China.

Since her return in Cyprus she has been a concert singer and has given numerous recitals and concerts in major concert halls in Cyprus, Greece, Romania and Mexico.
In April 2006 and October 2007 she was invited by the Breast Cancer support group of Paphos to sing at a Gala Dinner and Concert for Breast Cancer Awareness, with the tenor Martin Toal and violinist Craig Owen.
In March 2007 she was invited to sing at the Presidential Palace for ‘Woman’s Day’ in association with Europa Donna Cyprus.

In June 2007 she was nominated by Europa Donna Cyprus to represent Cyprus at the Nathwani Prize Competition which will take place in Berlin in 2008, as an artist whose experience with breast cancer has motivated and made a difference in the fight against the disease.

After being twice nominated (2006 and 2007) at the Madame Figaro ‘Woman of the Year’ she finally received the award of The Singer of the Year 2007 in a great ceremony amongst other Greek and Cypriot artists.
She has also made her appearance with a singing role in the TV series ‘Artos kai Theamata’ produced by CyBC.

A milestone in her career has been the completion of her first recording album ‘For A Lifetime’ with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra. The album was released in December 2005 and it contains crossover classical pieces. A year later she was nominated at the Cyprus College Music Awards and awarded for the Best Selling Album produced in Cyprus.

Apart from being a concert singer Marilena Solomou has been the Music Director of Acropolis Music Academy from 1998-2006 where she taught piano and music theory. She has also worked as a music specialist and choir director in private primary schools in Nicosia (Cyprus).

Her singing training includes masterclasses with the well known sopranos Susan Owen-Leinert, Ileana Cotrubas and mezzo soprano Rosalind Plowright. She has also been a student of the Italian soprano Tiziana Sojat for many years.

Concert performances of Marilena include arias form La Boheme, I Puritani, La Sonnambula, Herodiade, Faust, Die Fledermauss, Carmen, Le Nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, Cosi fan tutte, Linda di Chamonix, Die Zauberflote, Romeo et Juliette, Gianni Schicchi, German lieder by Schubert and Richard Strauss, songs by Rachmaninov, and songs from the musicals My Fair Lady, West side story, The Phantom of the opera, Chicago, Cabaret and many more.

Future engagements for Marilena include an invitation to sing for Europa Donna Cyprus, a recital with the Albanian tenor Agim Hushi and Cypriot conductor Yiannis Hadjiloizou, and A Broadway Evening concert with selections of well known musicals.
